Marks vs. Rank vs. Campus.
The numbers behind the choices.
Why cutoffs fluctuate, and how we map them.
Because SRMIST does not release official raw-mark-to-branch cutoffs, we analyze historical trends, paper difficulty across Phase 1 & 2, and student popularity indexes to construct an indicative planning matrix.
Your actual SRMJEEE All India Rank is the only official metric used in counselling, but mapping expected scores to rank-concentration bands allows us to suggest a highly strategic preference list.
Estimated Marks vs Rank Mapping
Based on a 130-mark exam pattern. High scorers cluster around top branches, while the middle bands experience high student density.
| Expected Score | Estimated Rank Range | Counselling Strategy & Outlook |
|---|---|---|
| 116 – 130 | Rank 1 – 1,200 | Competitive for CSE Core (Kattankulathur) and top-tier specialisations. |
| 101 – 115 | Rank 1,201 – 4,500 | Strong chance for CSE specialisations (AIML/Data Science) at Kattankulathur or CSE Core at Ramapuram/Vadapalani. |
| 81 – 100 | Rank 4,501 – 12,000 | Competitive for ECE, IT, and Mechatronics at Kattankulathur; CSE choices at secondary campuses are highly safe. |
| 61 – 80 | Rank 12,001 – 25,000 | Target EEE, Mechanical, and Biotechnology at Kattankulathur or CSE at regional campuses (Trichy/Ghaziabad). |
| Below 60 | Rank 25,000+ | Focus on core engineering, later-phase seat vacancies, and consider secondary campuses to secure allotment. |
Marks Concentration & Rank Shifts
Understanding candidate density is critical to ranking. A 1-mark difference affects students differently depending on their score range.
High-Score Range (110+)
At the upper end of the curve, candidate density is extremely low. A 1-mark shift here may only translate to a difference of 20–50 ranks. This means cutoffs for top programs like B.Tech CSE at Kattankulathur are highly stable and require consistently elite marks.
Middle-Score Range (75 – 95)
This is the peak of the candidate bell curve, where the highest concentration of test-takers sits. A single raw mark difference in this range can result in a shift of **500 to 1,000 ranks**. When choice filling, having backup campuses is essential because small shifts in cutoffs can lock out candidates unexpectedly.
Advised Priority Strategy
How you sequence your choices is just as important as your rank. Follow the 3-Tier Rule during counselling registration.
-
1
Tier 1: Ambitious Preferences (Top 20% of List)
Place branches where the closing marks are slightly higher than your expected score. If cutoffs drop or seats expand in early rounds, you stand a chance without risking your fallbacks.
-
2
Tier 2: Target Choices (Middle 60% of List)
Select branches where your score is firmly between the indicative opening and closing cutoffs. These are your most realistic and academically suitable matches.
-
3
Tier 3: Safe Fallbacks (Bottom 20% of List)
Always include 2 or 3 backup campus/branch choices where your score is safely above the historical closing marks. This guarantees you exit counselling with a confirmed seat.
